3 Tips to Get Your Business Publicity & Media Coverage

05/24/2014

When you’re starting a business, one of the biggest challenges you face is getting most of your marketing for nearly free, or as close to free as possible. One of the major areas that you’ll need to focus your attention is media coverage, which can usually be done for free if you make the right moves. Here are three ways to get media coverage without spending a cent.

  1. Leverage Your Contacts. If you’re in marketing, chances are you know at least one person that’s in the media industry (if you don’t, you may want to rethink your career.) All those times when you helped out your peers will pay off now since you can call in some favors with your friends at media outlets.

  2. Be Newsworthy. Probably the best way to get media coverage is to be newsworthy. Even if you’re project or product isn’t incredibly interesting, there’s always a creative way to spin your company’s story to make it something that news outlets will want to cover, even if it’s not the mainstream media (you may have to go to more specialty publications).

  3. Use Social Media.  While sometimes, it can be perceived as spammy, using social media, especially Twitter, to create or participate in a conversation involving your business or industry using #hashtags and engaging with media professionals, can actually get you some noticeable attention from some more niche publications.

Becoming a part of current events and getting your business’s name in the headlines is not easy; especially when you’re doing it using no marketing money. However, with a little persistence and outreach, anything is possible.
